Cuban Currency - The Convertible Peso

The currency in Cuba for tourists are the convertible pesos, when we was there the exchange rate at the hotel was 0.85 pesos to £1.00. When you get your money make sure you ask for some one peso notes for tipping.

I emailed the hotel before leaving to ask if they accepted sterling travelers cheques, which they do for a small commission charge. We asked our travel agent what the best option would be and one of the girls had been to Cuba herself and she advised us to take cash with us as she had heard of some people having trouble cashing up travelers cheques, but we was told to make sure that the notes were clean and not written on as some hotels are funny about that. The main reason for taking cash is because anything issued by an American bank they will not accept in Cuba and we didn't once see any cash machines.

I took £500 with me for two weeks spending money and came home with £200.
