Mosquitoes

During the rainy months the island is plagued by mosquitoes, during my two week stay we saw a large number of holiday makers with some very nasty looking bites all over their bodies, even the locals don't escape this menace.

These annoying little bugs aren't only active in the evenings, but also during the day, as soon as you step into the shade they will get you, which is where I got caught out. My best advice is to make sure you wear repellent during the day as well as in the evening, especially when going for breakfast when it is still cool and also if you are planning on going for a drink in the lobby, as they seem to love it in there.

In the mornings the gardeners go around with smoke machines to try and reduce the amount of mosquitoes in the resort, they usually do this early morning when the guests are still asleep.

We took a few different types of repellents with us, not all of them were strong enough though, the one that worked the best for me was Jungle Formula Extra Strength Tropical, when wearing this I didn't get bitten at all, we also wore mosquito bands in the evenings as well, not exactly a fashion statement but anything that keeps them away is worthwhile, you can find these in most supermarkets or chemists.

You will get bitten no matter how careful you are but if you take precautions you can reduce the number of bites you get.
